Make Colorful & Interesting Fall Bulletin Boards - Kellie Hayden
It's time to change the bulletin boards again. Teachers can try the Fall Leaves of Change or the Extracurricular Activities bulletin board.

Bulletin boards for the fall season come on the heels of the "welcome back" bulletin boards for the opening of school. The fall bulletin boards should be colorful and interesting for the students.

However, they should not be time consuming for the teacher. The following are some ideas that are simple and include student participation.

Falling Leaves of Change Bulletin Board

After middle school students settle in to the daily schedule of school, teachers make bulletin boards that make a statement about the rest of the school year. One idea is to create a bulletin board that focuses on fall leaves and positive changes.

To make the bulletin board, the teacher will need a brown tree trunk made from brown construction paper. In addition, the teacher will need a variety of fall color construction paper, markers, scissors. Also, the teacher will need to die-cut letters that spell out "Fall Leaves of Change" and border. The tree trunk, border and letters can be stapled to the bulletin board first.

Next, the teacher needs to direct the students to make a leaf shape on construction paper. It should be big enough for the student's name and some writing. For homework the previous night, the teacher could ask students to bring in an interesting leaf to use as a leaf template.

Student Participation in Bulletin Board

After the students have cut out a leaf, they will need to write their names on the leaf. In addition, they will need to come up with one positive change to pledge to do this school year. If students are having difficulties, they can brainstorm a list of ideas on the board. For example, they could use one of the following:

  • turn in work on time
  • spend more time on assignments
  • study more for quizzes and tests
  • do chores at home without being asked
  • act nicer towards siblings

After students have written their "fall change" and name neatly on the leaf, they need to staple it to the bulletin board.

Extracurricular Activities Bulletin Board

For this bulletin board, teachers will need border, construction paper, markers, scissors, and die-cut letters that spell out "Extracurricular Activities."

To help students get to know each other a little better, teachers can have students share what they do outside of the school day on a student designed shape for the bulletin board. Many times, students will be surprised what their fellow classmates post on the bulletin board.

Learn About Others Though After School Activities

Students first need to select their favorite activity. If they are having difficulty coming up with ideas, they can brainstorm ideas as a class or choose from the following:

  • sports (school sponsored or out of school)
  • crafts
  • hobbies
  • musical instruments
  • video games
  • singing
  • dancing

Whether the teacher chooses to make the Falling Leaves of Change bulletin board or the Extracurricular Activities bulletin board, most students will enjoy making it. Plus, students will get to know each other a little bit better.
